Bruyn was a Dutch painter who left Holland for Italy in 1674. In 1678 he journeyed on to Smyrna and travelled throughout the Middle East. In 1685 he returned to Italy, where he settled in Venice for eight years. In 1693 he returned to Holland. This manuscript is a richly detailed account of the author's travels. A Swedish edition of Bruyn's Reizen has yet to appear in print.
